Once upon a time, there was a young couple. She was from a noble family in Bern, he was the orphaned son of a blacksmith. She was promised to the son of a Zurich merchant, so the two lovers had to meet in secret. The abandoned inn on the local mountain offered them refuge from the suspicion of the nobility and gossiping tongues.
One foggy day, a constable from the Gürbetal valley lost his way due to poor visibility and wanted to wait for better weather at the inn. He surprised the young couple, who were just stoking a fire in the kitchen stove. “Shouldn't I know you?” he asked somewhat harshly. The young woman replied without hesitation and with deliberate cunning: “I will forgive you because you don't know where you are due to the fog. We are the Gurtners and have been running this inn for five generations. This mountain was named after us. And you don't know us?” Suspiciously, the constable let his gaze wander over the dusty pots and said, “Then cook me something delicious and I will believe you.” In order not to give themselves away, the two set about preparing a wonderful meal. She rinsed the pots and washed the carrots that were still stored in the cellar – he gathered mushrooms in the forest clearing, picked celeriac from the roadside and leeks from the neighbor's field.
No one knows whether it was the hospitality or a certain ingredient that made the dish so incomparably delicious. But that evening in town, the constable spoke enthusiastically about the Gurtners and their exquisite food. More and more people found their way to the Gurten to dine and enjoy themselves. The young couple married, took the name Gurtner, and offered everyone a wonderful place to rest and enjoy fine food on the local mountain. They welcomed hikers, travelers, and even secret lovers, giving them an unforgettable stay far away from the clatter of hooves on the cobblestone streets of the city.
The Gurtners' menu is still on our menu today. It reminds us that good stories can also be invented, as long as the fairy tale of hospitality and enjoyment for all visitors comes true on the Gurten.
