Up and away to a spectacular 360° view!
Situated at 864 m above sea level and 332 m above Bern, the Gurten offers a fantastic panoramic view: Let your eyes wander over Switzerland’s capital with its UNESCOprotected domes, towers and roofs. Over the Swiss plateau with its charming villages, well-kept fields and forests aplenty. Over the Swiss Alps with peaks rising over 4000 m and capped with eternal snow, and across the Three Lakes Region all the way to the Jura mountain range.

Here’s a tip: Climb up the Gurten viewing tower and leave your daily routine down on the ground – free of charge.

Up and away into nature!
Why not take a break from the city for a few hours? Go on a leisurely hike across flowery meadows and evergreen forests. Take a summer evening walk featuring a romantic sunset over the Jura mountains. Make a family outing to the vast Gurten playground high above the sea of fog. Or delight in a winter descent along the children’s ski lift or on one of our toboggan runs.

Up and away with the Gurten Funicular!
No cars are permitted on Bern’s local mountain, but it is easily accessible by taking the red Gurten Funicular. Built in 1899, this was once the fastest railway of its kind in Switzerland, and it has transported over 30 million passengers to date. Since 1999, new panoramic carriages have been in operation between the valley station in Wabern, the Grünenboden middle station and Gurten-Kulm at the top. The Gurten Funicular runs daily from 7.00–23.45, and on Sunday from 7.00–20.15.

Up and away from the city – only 30 minutes from the main station!
This is how you get to the valley station of the Gurten Funicular: Take tram no. 9 at Bern main station – or Köniz municipal bus no. 29, which runs between Niederwangen and Wabern – and after a ten-minute trip get off at the «Gurtenbahn» stop. Alternatively, on the S3 S-Bahn train (Thun–Biel) as far as the «Wabern» stop. If you travel by car, take the Bümpliz/Köniz motorway exit and then head towards Belp-Flughafen (airport) until you see the –«Gurtenbahn» sign in Bern-Wabern directing you towards the parking garage.
